On Thursday, DC Superior Court Judge Danya Dayson denied a request by Ruby Corado to impose a gag order — prohibiting the Attorney General’s office or the court-appointed receiver from discussing or releasing information that was part of the public record. Corado appeared critical of a story that appeared in the Washington Blade one hour after the receiver’s report was filed. She claimed that she was being portrayed inaccurately by the press.
Nick Harrison, the attorney representing the receiver, noted that the court’s proceedings were a matter of public record and that there was considerable interest in the story. Thus, it was likely that the journalists covering the matter were monitoring the court’s electronic filing system. Judge Dayson agreed — saying that there was a strong presumption that court proceedings should be open to the public and that there were not sufficient grounds to justify such an order.
